Conversation 24: Yvonne Pepin-Wakefield

Hi all!

Welcome back to Clockwork Conversations! I am thrilled to be hosting today a fascinating human being and author, Yvonne Pepin-Wakefield!

Welcome, Yvonne! Please start by telling us a little about yourself.

YPW: My new book; Babe in the Woods: Building a Life One Log at a Time, is about my experience when I was 18 and building a log cabin, alone in the Oregon mountains.  Published by Booktrope, its release is scheduled for August 2015.

Q1: I discovered reading your press sheet that you're an artist as well as a writer. What is your favorite medium to work in, and why?

YPW:  Oil paint because it’s sensuous, malleable and rich, like clay also a favorite medium.

Q2: You taught fine art overseas for a period of time. I know that there were countless lessons you taught your students: was there any one lesson that stood out that they taught you over the time you were there?

YPW: That young women universally, be they Muslim, Hindu, Japanese, whatever country they live in or religion they practice all have a spirit-spark within them.

Q3: You have learned a lot about building and working with tools in your adventures over the years. What would you say is the one most useful tool anyone can own?

YPW: Self confidence

Why? With self confidence I believe, a person would try any and all tools, metal ones or mental ones in an attempt to succeed in any task physical or psychological.

Q4: If you could build anything from the ground up now, starting today after all your experiences, what would that thing be? Would it be a tangible place, a specific kind of future for yourself, or both?

YPW:  I would build a huge, beautiful compound surrounded by ponds, meadows and woodlands. There would be sections for old people, orphans and abandoned and/or neglected animals. Everyone would take care of everyone else and meet for meals in a common courtyard. Not one being there would ever again experience, loneliness or hunger physically or spiritually.

Q5: *bonus question for everyone* Do you collect anything? If so, why?

YPW:  I use to collect old postcards until some nut case at an antique store threw them all out and Kewpie dolls which I still have.
